Mission

Hartwood is dedicated to developing opportunities for persons who have mental retardation and other developmental disabilities to become active and vital members of their communities.

Services

Hartwood currently operates 18 group residences (15 in Fairfax and 3 in the Henrico/Richmond area) housing and supporting 93 persons in the community; a facility-based respite and emergency services project with 6 beds (also located in Fairfax county); in-home supports program serving 15 families; a respite subsidy project that provides financial support to families who have special care needs; and 5 private endowment funds.Hartwood is licensed through the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation & Substance Abuse Services. Hartwood provides a variety of service options for people of many ages.

History

Hartwood Foundation, Inc. was founded in 1973 as a nonsectarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering the interests of and opportunities for persons with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. The volunteer Board of Directors has elected to pursue this mission through the development and operation of respite and residential programs; and the establishment of several private funds that provide funding for special activities beyond those which government provides.

  • 2000 Recipient of the Secretary’s Commendation for High Performing Multi-Family Properties presented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

  • 1996 Recipient of the United Way’s IMBY Award for housing and support services for individuals with Development Disabilities

  • 1995 Recipient of Commendation from the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board for Housing and Development Partnership

  • 1985 Recipient of the AAMD (American Association for the Mentally Disabled) Award for outstanding service to people with developmental disabilities
